    Brake dust!

Ok i dont have a problem with dust on the outside of the rims. Its mainly whats built up on the insides. I hate looking at it when I clean my rims. Its on the back and in the nooks and crannys of my rims. What can I do to get it off and bring the nice shine to the inside of my rims?

I think you`ll find some answers to your brake dust problem in this current thread:

THE BEST off the shelf consumer product that I`ve found is Meguires Hot Rims. You can find it at Autozone, PepBoys, Walmart, etc...

Dwayne sent me a bottle of the 4* wheel gel cleaner, and that is an awesome product too. I haven`t tried the PB`s yet, but hear that it`s really good too.

Start off with the meg`s hot rims, and a wheel brush. The key is to clean the inside of your rims whenever you wash your car, or at least once a week for a daily driver.

I forgot to add this suggestion.

When the "brake dust / wheel cleaning" problem has been resolved, install some ceramic brake pads (at least on the front where dusting is heaviest) and 99% of the brake dusting issues will not recur.

Less dust, same stopping power .... it`s a win-win situation.

Ceramics are nice, but they take time to heat up in the winter months. Agree though, that they do take care of the brake dust issues.

    Re: Brake dust!

I`ve only used ceramic pads through 1 winter & I didn`t notice extended stopping distances due to the ceramic pads being at less-than optimum operating temperature.

I`m usually driving cautiously from late Nov - early March and I don`t assume the roads are in a "wet/salted" condition just because of the absence of snow and/or ice, I`m thinking "black ice".

I`m not crazy about living here, I`m just trying to make it to retirement & then I`m heading someplace warmer.

    Re: Brake dust!

Sorry to not add this info. I`ve been using totl rim cleaner. The outside of my stock f150 rims are clean and good 99% of time cause I use cermaic pads. But there is stuff that is in the corners and the backside I want to get off.

What kind of brush are you supposed to use? I`ve got a yellow plasticky sponge one from totl.

    Re: Brake dust!

I`ve not heard of the cleaner that you are using if its over the counter may not be strong enough. The 4* gel works well and from my limited use it safe on about all finishes. You may need a stronger acid based cleaner to put in the back of the rim to eat threw the more baked on dust, or take the rims off and attack from the back. On the acid cleaners you really need to be carefull with these harmfull to you and can damage the finish on the rims, sort of a last resort short of taking the rims off.

For the brushes I use a flat toliet brush works wonder at getting into the back of the rim. The tight areas a good stiff paint brush or a mechanics brush where the brissles stick out of the end. You can never have enough brushes for cleaning.

the cleaner i use is from top of the line. It works ok, but whatever one i do use i have to wash it off quick. Almost all leave a haze on my rims.
