Default What to use on aluminum 1969 Avian camper

Help I need some good advice on what to use on the outside of a 1969 Avian camper,I used a light acid wash and bought some Mothers power metal for aluminum hand rubbed it on and also used a buffer and it doesn't seem to help any. It's heavily oxidized and I"m pretty sure its aluminum because the metal polish is turning black as I rub it on.anything else ya"ll think will work better,I would appreciate your advice, thanks barry

If it's nearly 40 years old, I would think it's going to take considerable work.

You may try a more aggressive pad - wool instead of the foam PowerBall would be my first guess.

Is the aluminum anodized, or bare polished aluminum? Have any pix?

Barry.
Welcome to the forum. I hope we can assist you, not only with your boat, but other things as well.

Sorry to bust in on a thread with something not related, But usually, first thing I do when I see a new guy arrive at the forum is to look at the profile.
I know it's way off topic, and no one will get it, but I sure did a double take when I saw your car, and the name.

Anodizing is a hard, thin coating over the top of the aluminum. A metal polish will remove it, so I'd suggest you NOT use Mag & Aluminum Polish and a pad (wool or otherwise) on it unless you don't mind removing the anodize coat.

Once anodizing goes, it's gone and can't be restored - only replaced by a qualified plating shop. You may want to look in to powder coating as an alternative.

Barry.
Nice van. Good work too.
We had those vans here in Australia, but not the Campers. Mainly as a delivery truck. They were called Ford Transit here in Australia.

Harumph! What's that sticker I see in the black on the passenger door there? Yuk yuk yuk!

Tony.

hehehe. half-breed waxing?

seriously though... I l-o-v-e the van.. sigh... how I wish most vans sold back home still looked "old-school" like this. (an exemption for the VW though hehe)

Yes,I do use some Meguiar's products,I also use Mothers,Auto magic as well.I would use more Mothers products, but I buy by the gallon for most everything I use it wouldnt be too cost effective buying everything in smaller sizes.
