This evening I found myself at the magazine rack in the local Target store (while waiting on the wife to finish school supplies shopping). There was a magazine titled "Home Business Opportunities" or something like that. It listed the top 100 best stay at home businesses. Automotive detailing listed out at number 12. The short blurb on it was in a really positive note stating things like "many Americans are more than willing to pay $50-$150 for a good hand wash and wax...monthly."

Guess you guys are on to something.

Thats really a reassuring statistic. Ive been into detailing for about 4 years, Im only three months in business and Im skeptical about the demand already. The only thing that keeps me going is EVERYONE says just hang tight. Once your name gets out there, youre good.

You need to get agressive. I didnt make good money at this until my 5-6 year into it. I didnt have a biz plan, I didnt get help from anybody and I wasnt confident to charge allot. Allthat has changed and life is good.

Location, Location, Location

Let me elaborate....I`ve been selling car care products for a long time and run into detailers all the time. I`ve listened to a lot of stories.

Seems that if you are not in a major market where there are people with a lot of disposable income , then it`s hard to charge enough to make a living. One guy i remember told me he charged $50 for a complete in and out detail...roughly $10 an hour....that was in North Eastern , PA and I`ve heard similar stories upstae NY and from other parts ofthe country where the economy is a bit depressed. There are some exceptions to every rule and there are some communities where there is money. You need to find those communities and concentrate on them.
Doctors, Lawyers, Real estate people tend to have nicer cars and litte time to clean them themselves..these are good places to start...
