    Angry Dealership prices

Took the wife`s Taurus to the dealership last week because the "Service Engine Soon" lamp had come on. They determined that one cylinder was mis-firing due to a bad ignition wire. THe cure, new plugs and wires and their price $300.00 . We`re talking a 6 cylinder Taurus here not a darn M series Beemer!

A stop at the auto supply and I had 6 autolite double platinum plugs (they cross referenced to the Motorcraft OE plugs which were also double platinum) and a set of Autolite Professional Series (lifetime warranty) wires. My parts cost was $60.00 including a tube of anti-seeze compound.

Two hours and $60.00 later the service was done in my driveway, check engine light went off and the car runs smoother than it has since we purchased it 2 years used in 1998. If I hadn`t specified on the drop off slip not to perform anything over $200.00 without calling first they would have just done the deed and given me a royal screwing. I did have them fix a rear tranny seal for $143.00. I wasn`t about to pull the axle in my driveway.

So check up on your dealer/repair shop prices before giving the green light. You may save yourself a bunch of dough to spend on more detailing supplies that will sit in the cabinets alongside all the other crap we have .

If the part was 60 dollars and it took you two hours to do then they probably calculated around the same amount of time.

    $60.00 part
    2 hrs at $80.00 an hour = 160.00

    320.00 total

The labor charges is where the screw comes in.

    $60 = $160 = $220

I got no beef with Natty, that`s smart to do what you can, but this rankles me:

    Give me a break.

All I can say is I`m very happy I can change my own oil . I can do the coolant on my other car too.

I really need to learn to do plugs and brakes. Can save big money, do the job on my own terms and give the car the royal treatment no dealer ever would.
